I haven't had much of chance to get out to the Market this summer, so I haven't gone out and bought my bag of culantro (Recao) from the latino foodstuffs booth there. Thankfully in July while doing some shopping at Homedepot I found they had 4 little potted Culantro plants, which I replanted in my garden. My garden this year has been grossly neglected, with weeds and carrot tops poking up in equal amounts. The one thing I haven't neglected has been the Recao, going out every few weeks to see if any new leaves had come.
It has been a very interesting experience, because shortly after I planted it, the plants bolted and out came this stems with spiky thorny leaves, which make the experience reaching underneath the plant for its aromatic long leaves a hurty one.
The thorny spikes will shoot out seeds shortly; send me some please! How neat is that culantro in New York. La jibarita. If Don Manuel could see you now, he would be proud.
